GAME ASSET CREATION
GRADE 77% - A

1st Year Semester Two University Module

  • What I learnt

This was my first art based modelling module introducing me to the fundamental skills required for creating and importing 3D assets, materials, textures, particles and audio into Unreal Engine using Autodesk Maya for modelling and substance painter for texturing. I developed an understanding of suitable file formats, resolutions and sizes used in game engines while creating these assets. I planned out a contained environment researching game asset design, development theories and technologies acting with autonomy under supervision from my lecturer in the development of the game assets creation and related tasks within the defined guidelines (Visual Style.) I made sure I was engaging with appropriate techniques, software, tools and procedures in the design and development of this project.

  • What I was aiming for

I was aiming in this project to create a scary atmospheric sci-fi scene taking inspiration from the visual style being based on the game Alien Isolation. I wanted to make a scene that felt to scale with the player with areas that really made you want to go explore what lay within the darkness...

  • What could've gone better?

  • Asset texturing resolution in engine - When I imported some assets into my scene the resolution looked quite blurry compared to how they looked in substance painter.

  • Scene lighting - The lighting in my scene could've been better by playing around with post processing effects and making use of emissive materials instead of placing light actors.

  • Material roughness - I could've done with adjusting some of the scenes materials such as the floor and metal elements to be less reflective and shiny as they look way too much in places which takes away from the scenes aesthetic appeal.
