Year 3 Semester 2 University Module

  • What I learnt

Valuable Experience: Throughout this project, I gained invaluable experience in game system design, development, and project management. Working on a complex game system allowed me to apply theoretical knowledge to practical scenarios, enhancing my understanding of these concepts.

1. Problem-Solving Skills: The application of various theories and frameworks to real-world situations significantly improved my problem-solving skills. I encountered complex challenges and had to think creatively to find solutions, which contributed to my growth as a developer.

2. Time Management: I learned a crucial lesson about time management. Allocating time effectively to critical project aspects is essential for success. Challenges and delays in the resource management system underscored the importance of proper time allocation.

3. Insights into Game Design: This development process provided me with valuable insights into game design theories and their practical implementation. It allowed me to bridge the gap between theory and practice, enhancing my understanding of how games are designed and developed.

  • What I was aiming for

1. Primary Project Goal: My primary objective was to create a functional demonstration of an RTS-style building system with survival elements. I aimed to showcase a cohesive gameplay experience that combined both building and resource management mechanics.

2. Deliverables: I set out to achieve all the must-have deliverables for the project, ensuring that it met the intended scope and quality standards.
3. Complementary Systems: The building system and resource management aspects of the project were designed to complement each other seamlessly. The goal was to create a gameplay experience where these elements worked together to engage players effectively.

4. Skill Enhancement: Beyond the technical aspects, this project was an opportunity for personal growth. I aimed to enhance my skills in game design, problem-solving, and decision-making, ultimately becoming a more capable game developer.

  • What could've gone better?

1. Resource Management Challenges: One of the notable challenges was that the resource management system did not reach its full potential due to challenges and delays. This highlights the importance of thorough planning and allocation of resources and time.
2. Time Allocation: In hindsight, more time should have been allocated for the comprehensive implementation of the resource management system. Adequate time management is critical for project success.
3. Camera Controller: The camera controller faced difficulties and required additional refinement. Future iterations could benefit from early exploration of alternative camera control methods and addressing potential issues proactively.
4. Improvement Opportunities: To improve similar projects in the future, I would consider allocating more time to critical aspects like resource management, focusing on early development to address potential challenges effectively.

In summary, this project has been a valuable learning experience, allowing me to gain practical insights into game system design, enhance problem-solving skills, improve time management, and apply game design theories. These lessons will undoubtedly prove beneficial in future game development endeavors.
